Species 2000 China Node

The Species 2000 China Node is a regional hub of the international program-Species 2000 program, it was proposed to establish on February 7, 2006 by the Species 2000 Secretariat and is launched up on October 20, 2006. The Biodiversity Committee of Chinese Academy of Sciences (BC-CAS), cooperated with other partner organizations, supports and supervises the establishment of the Species 2000 China Node.

The goal of the Species 2000 China Node project is to collect and verify the taxonomic information of all species (plants, animals and microorganisms) distributed in China, and to provide a validated checklist, the Catalogue of Life China, to all users in the world.

A Working Group and an IT Service Group for Species 2000 China Node Project have been established. The Working Group is responsible for the integrated design and implementation of the project, which headed by Prof. Keping Ma. Headed by Prof. Liqiang Ji, the IT Service Group provides the related IT technical support for the project.

To form a final checklist, following are key steps of species data integration in Species 2000 China Node:

  • Assessing species data in existing databases
  • Re-arranging the species data to form an initial checklist according to the standard dataset of Species 2000 International
  • Developing a software tool to help check and confirm the contents of the checklist
  • Distributing the initial checklist with the software tool to taxonomists to validate the data
  • Collecting the data checked and combining them together to the final checklist

At present, Species 2000 China Node provides information service based on the DVD-ROM and website with online database. Similar to the Global Catalogue of Life, the Catalogue of Life China Annual Checklist DVDs are published and distributed freely. Both the DVD and website have a Chinese and English interface. The website of Species 2000 China Node also provides the mirror database of the Global Catalogue of Life for users, both the Chinese and English interface provide users all information of the global checklist.
